Fumare's Patron Saint: Blessed Pius IX

Last April, Fr. Reginald Foster, OCD, the celebrated papal Latinist, spoke on this little known but essential aspect of the pontificate of Blessed Pius IX. (hat tip: Fr. Coulter)
(Here is a picture of the beautiful pontifical cigar rolling shop!)

Blessed Pius IX, Patron of Fumare, ora pro nobis.

Is It Possible That AMSL Doesn't Move To Florida In Summer 2009?

Is it possible for Tom Monaghan to change his mind once again and to decide to NOT move Ave Maria School of Law to Florida, at least not next summer as currently planned? Would Monaghan and the Board of Governors really break their promises to current and incoming students at AMSL that they will be attending a school in Florida come August 2009? After the chaos of recent years, after so many faculty and staff have either left or been removed from the school because of not wanting to go to Florida, would the school decide to stay in Michigan after all, at least for the time being?

It might not be that far-fetched. There are rumors at the school saying that this option has at least been considered by the administration. We know the economy is bad and that the Ave Maria housing market is terrible. Remember, this past spring, the Board of Governors decided not to move to Ave Maria University but instead to move to the Naples Vineyards campus "in light of the declining national economy and the high construction costs resulting from the rising prices of raw materials." It's possible that Monaghan and the Board of Governors could use the same excuse to not move to Florida but to stay in Michigan. (No doubt, the press release from the school would say that the law school is still moving to Florida, but that the move has only been temporarily delayed due to the economy.)

Also, if you remember, before the Vineyards announcement in April 2008, the school delayed breaking ground on the planned law school building at Ave Maria University for months and months. At the time, one of the excuses given for the delay was that the planning was not complete with building permits to obtain and building specs to meet. In hindsight, it looks suspiciously like Monaghan was waiting and not wasting money on breaking ground if he didn't have to. In order to move to Vineyards, building renovations are required in order to make the facility suitable for a law school. As of a few of weeks ago, the administration was saying that renovations had not yet started because the school still had to get the necessary building permits, etc. Have the Vineyards renovations started yet? And if not, might the delay be Monaghan waiting and not wasting money on renovations if he doesn't have to?

Email Re:July 2008 Michigan Bar Passage Rates

From: Milhizer, Eugene R
Sent: Tue 11/18/2008 12:02 PM
To: All Law System Distribution; All Alumni
Subject: Michigan Bar Results

Dear Law School Community,

The State of Michigan July 2008 bar examination results have been released and published. Forty-five graduates of Ave Maria School of Law sat for the July 2008 bar exam. Thirty-five of these graduates passed, resulting in a 78% overall bar passage rate. This overall passage rate exceeds the state average of 71% and ranks Ave Maria School of Law second among Michigan schools for all test takers for the July 2008 bar exam. First-time test takers from Ave Maria School of Law passed at a rate of 80%, which ranks our Law School fourth in the state among first-time test takers from Michigan schools. This 80% figure is eight percentage points higher than the average for first-time test takers from Ave Maria School of Law for the July 2007 bar exam. Also, the July 2008 total of thirty-five successful test takers represents the most Ave Maria graduates passing any particular Michigan bar exam.

A review of the both exams administered during calendar year 2008 (both the February and July 2008 bar exams) reflects even more favorable results. For all test takers during 2008, graduates of Ave Maria School of Law passed the Michigan bar examination at a rate of 79%. This figure is higher than the state average of 70% and is second in the state behind the University of Michigan Law School.

Many people deserve our thanks for these improved results: the faculty who teach our students; Academic Support, Career Services, and Student Affairs who helped design and implement our bar examination preparation program; the many alumni who participated in the program and encouraged our graduates; and, most importantly, the graduates themselves. Our faculty and staff are committed to building upon these improved results and working toward an even more favorable showing next year.

Eugene R. Milhizer
Acting Dean and Professor of Law

When Gays Attack!

What is so bad about gay riots? Surely in the wake of these rampaging gentle souls the world could only be a better place? When gays attack, don't they leave behind better dress sense, fabulously redecorated interiors and stylish haircuts? When gays get at you, open your arms, they won't poke you, they'll just primp you.

Well it seems that when gays attack, the most peace loving non-violent folks are their targets.

For something completely different, do some good and vote for Thomas Peters for a blogging scholarship. He frequently posts about Fumare on his American Papist blog.

So Naive

Thanks goodness for Forest Whittaker and Cameron Diaz. Without their efforts, we may have never achieved our ecumenical efforts. To think, that with the help of these great, enlightened beings from "TED" we will accomplish what we strove for, for nearly two millennium, what the grace of God Almighty and His Paraclete could not accomplish. Oh, how thankful am I that they have deigned to turn their attention to our pitiful cause. Oh the hope, the joy . . . .

After all, religion is just a system of belief; if we all just sat down and negotiated a compromise. . . it's not as if it came from God or something. . . .

I, personally, would like people to stop telling me/thinking that I'm wrong for wanting/voting for marriage to be solely between a man and a woman. I'm sure that if we talked about it. . . .

After Cameron explains to Islam that the Koran is not "really" the words of God. . . .
St. Obama, pray. . . .

Clinton III

Some of the cabinet appointments are making it clear that we aren't quite getting Stalin, rather, this is going to be Clinton III. All of the Clinton machine people appear to be getting top spots. Apparently, Obama was a rather clever front man that had a lot of us fooled into thinking who supported him was a lot of things it wasn't. I think it's actually a pretty slick move by the Clinton machine, or by those who made the Clinton machine.

I wonder how long it will take for the radical lefties to realize that they supported an empty shell. It took the Emmanuel appointment for Iran to figure it out... they came to Obama with hat in hand hoping "to talk."

Let's Play Kick the Palin!

Now that the election is over, the national political hopes of Gov. Sarah Palin must come to an end. Why? Because she represents traditional Christian Conservativism and is 100% pro-life.

Over the next several days, she will be stuck with a thousand knives and not a single Neo-Conservative will come to her defense. Is it her falut McCain lost? Give me a break! The only reason why anyone voted for McCain was because of her addition to his ticket.

They know it, they know that this was more an election between Obama and Palin than with McCain. It was pure identity politics - racism vs. feminism.

But the duopoly do not want Christian Conservativism (never mind of the Pro-Life variety) in power. So sit back and watch the stoning of Sarah Palin!  She was too popular, too conservative, too pro-life to live.

What will be Kmiec's Reward?

American Papist has the latest on the 11th hour exchange between Prof. Kmiec and his dear friend "Charles", who responded immediately here

Kmiec's letter drips with disingenuous sentiment and basically accuses the Church of not doing enough to support crisis pregnancies.

However, this now brings to mind the question: What will be Kmiec's reward from Obama's New Hope America?

My guess?

He will head up a new "pro-life" special commission in the Obama administration that will be charged with the task of "reducing abortions, by reducing unwanted pregnancies."

It will be the equivalent of the Faith Based Initiatives program - a program that made it seem like the Bush Administration was pro-Christian, but was intended to do nothing except keep the Evangelicals in the Bush camp.

This new "Pro-Life" program will serve to do the same thing for the Obama Pro-Lifers: keep them in the Obama camp for 8 years.  This new office will give this group the psychological justification to stay with Obama even through the delivery of the Planned Parenthood promises (FOCA, etc).  It will particularly seek to work with Churches to "reduce abortions," and perhaps even attack the Catholic Church for not helping to reduce unwanted pregnancies through national contraception education and distribution programs.

The office will do one thing: make the case that the Obama's policies are working to reduce unwanted pregnancies.

I suspect that Kmiec will be head this up, and this will be his reward in the new administration.

I do not think that he will be apointed to the Supreme Court, but this is another possibility.

What do you think will be his reward?

Be Filled With Joy

We are Christians, first and foremost. We've each had a chance to vent (see my late night rant from yesterday). We are now getting an opportunity to absorb what happened yesterday. We should be strategic and look for chances to influence the good in society and deliver a great conservative candidate next election cycle.

That said, I'd like to echo some of the posts and comments below in a way. One of the things I have disliked about the Left in this country is their bitterness at losing. They tear one another and the winners apart. They are angry and bitter.

I prayed a Novena to St. Jude for God's Will in this election. We have it now, for purposes He may never fully reveal. Let us be clever and strategic, but most of all, let us be cheerful and truly joyful. Our hope is in Christ, our victory assured. Let us show something in the days to come that will shock those who are un-tethered to a lasting peace. Let us meet their celebratory attitude -no matter how poor it may be - with a smile, and a true reflection of our interior peace that only God can provide. Pray for our leaders and our country. Stand up and fight when we must. But show a joy that may convert more hearts than we know. Will you join me?

Dispatch from the Heart of Darkness: Time to Wake Up

As we arise to a new America today where the flood gates of abortion are set to swing wide, where pro-life clinics will be made illegal, where hate crimes will become federalized, where the Church will come under explicit attack for its role in this election, where there will be a national police force answering only to Obama, where amnesty for illegals will secure this Marxist victory for years to come, where homeschooling is likely to become illegal, where economic policies will lead us into a sustained depression, where martial law is likely to be imposed in the coming months and years, where we will be a sitting target for an attack, perhaps even an invasion . . .

It is time for the Church in America to wake up and understand our enemy.

To understand who our enemy is, we should spend some time contemplating Week 2, Day 4 of St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises: The Two Standards:
The one of Christ, our Commander-in-chief and Lord; the other of Lucifer,
mortal enemy of our human nature.
This is the real fight that we are in.

What is the objective of our enemy in our current historical moment? A good source for answering that question can be found in Hope of the Wicked.

This book outlines the agenda, and it is not a conspiracy theory, it is a matter of clear documentary evidence, and it is the agenda of BOTH Democrats and Republican elites:

A global communist state that enslaves us and is controlled by elite philosopher kings.

Casimir a week or so ago quoted Zbigniew Brzezinski:

"The Technocratic Age is slowly designing an every day more controlled society. The society will be dominated by an elite of persons free from traditional values (!) who will have no doubt in fulfilling their objectives by means of purged techniques with which they will influence the behavior of people and will control and watch the society in all details". "... it will become possible to exert a practically permanent watch on each citizen of the world".

Like it or not, we were just subjected to a stage show that was called a national election. The party system is a dialectical control system, a duopoly, used to advance on the agenda.

Zbigniew Brzezinski - Obama "advisor"
Brzezinski (son) - Obama "advisor"
Milka Brzezinski (daughter) - Media
Ian Brzezinski (son) - McCain "advisor"

Hmm . . . I guess Ian is just the black sheep in the family.

And just as the elites of the Nazi's were practicing occultists, so too are our controlling elites. Roy Schoeman author of Salvation is from the Jews, said that the three cultural elements that led to Nazism were 1) The Mainstreaming of Sexual Perversion (especially S&M homosexuality), 2) Eugenics programs, and 3) Occultism. Schoeman also points out that these three elements are alive and growing in America today.

Our enemy isn't Islam (although a conflict with Islam is inevitable), it is Marxism and the occultism behind it - ultimately it is organized Satanism that we are dealing with.

We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone through. I do not think that wide circles of the American society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel and the anti-Gospel. This confrontation lies within the plans of divine providence. It is a trial which the whole Church… must take up. –Cardinal Karol Wotyla, two years before becoming Pope John Paul II, in an address to the American Bishops.

What is the anti-Church if not the cult of Lucifer?

What is the solution?

Casimir pointed to the messages of Fatima. I agree that this is the answer. Also, we should study what John Paul II did in Poland, especially the Solidarity movement, because we will need a similar movement on a global scale because that is where the fight is going (if not there already).

Have another read of Ecclesia in America with an understanding that John Paul II knew what was facing America. Read the part on Solidarity as a political movement designed to overthrow tyranny. When I was in Rome this past year, I learned that John Paul II discerned a strategy for countering this rise of evil in the world. He prayed about where to deposit this strategy and discerned that it was to be given to America (as a whole continent North & South). In Ecclesia in America the plan is outlined:

1. Encounter with the Living Jesus Christ
2. The Path of Conversion
3. The Path to Communion
4. The Path to Solidarity

We are reaching an end game for global order. It will either be ordered by the Cult of Death, or the Cult of Life. The outline of each of these proposals is global communism or global family based on Christian Solidarity; becoming enslaved under Lucifer, or choosing to become a slave to the Immaculata; a New Age global occultist culture, or a profound blossoming of Trinitarian mystical life. This is the drama of our time (the struggle with Islam is a side show to this). We are fighting a conspiracy of death that reaches the highest levels of international life:

"This conspiracy involves not only individuals in their personal, family or group relationships, but goes far beyond, to the point of damaging and distorting, at the international level, relations between peoples and States." - John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae

How grave is the situation?

"The grave challenges confronting the world at the start of this new Millennium lead us to think that only an intervention from on high, capable of guiding the hearts of those living in situations of conflict and those governing the destinies of nations, can give reason to hope for a brighter future. The Rosary is by its nature a prayer for peace, since it consists in the contemplation of Christ, the Prince of Peace, the one who is “our peace” (Eph 2:14). Anyone who assimilates the mystery of Christ – and this is clearly the goal of the Rosary – learns the secret of peace and makes it his life's project." - John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae

From tonight's Compline...

Each Tuesday, my wife and I recite the following poem at the beginning of Night Prayer, instead of the standard hymn. We've done this for several years now, but never has it meant more to us than this Tuesday night.

The poem was found written in the breviary of St. Teresa of Avila, and seems particularly appropriate under the circumstances:

Let nothing disturb thee,
Nothing affright thee
All things are passing;
God never changeth;
Patient endurance
Attaineth to all things;
Who God possesseth
In nothing is wanting;
Alone God sufficeth.

Also tonight, we committed to closing Compline with a prayer for our nation, and for the conversion of President Obama. This may not seem like much, but we simply cannot discount the power of prayer in times of trial.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, ora pro nobis. Immaculate Conception, ora pro nobis.

Let the Reign of Terror Begin . . .

Life issues, our liberties, and conservative principles to the guillotine?

I find myself repeating one phrase: "It took Carter to give us Reagan."

I think I may end up going mad, as I am already sick of talking heads telling me how proud we are supposed to be for electing the most socialist, pro-abortion President in American history. I am not proud. People wanted to be part of making "history" happen. They wanted to say they voted for the first black President, even though most could not articulate a reason for why they agree with his views. The press wanted to have a hand in it, and they did. Fine. I only hope he doesn't destroy the country before people realize what they've done.

Let's hope the Dems are bold. Let's hope the Dems badly over-reach, and do it early. Openly try to raise our taxes, attack our religious institutions, and blatantly attack our families. Better we fight these battles out in the open, and now. People still have fight left in them, and most Americans aren't ready for the liberal agenda. Many don't realize that's what they've given us in spades. We are ready for you libs. The drive to organize will be high in response to these affronts. I hope you make every unwitting effort to wake these people up to their poor choice early.

Republicans better realize that we need to organize around a real conservative next go 'round. We've got about 2.3 years to find that person.

Please enjoy this commentary for as long as we still have free speech to post it.

So why do we have election ballots again?

California had not even closed its polls, but FOX and CNN felt it necessary to call CA for Obama, and show a celebration from Chicago.

How? There was no way the votes were counted.

It's a joke -- the news, especially FOX News, is a laughing absurdity.

UPDATE: I am also disappointed that McCain is actually conceding based on news projections...

it all looks too scripted.

UPDATE II:At McCain's concession speech, people broke spontaneously into chanting "count our votes... count our votes..." McCain is making me sick.

This is going to be a mess. Almost makes me wish the super human black men would have gotten here.

“You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the Pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that he is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world”.

It's not just abortion...

While I appreciate the good intentions of the many people asking for the intercession of abortion "martyrs" (technically, they are innocents, but not martyrs per se and therefore have unknown intercessory power), I think people are missing the full scope of the intrinsic evil we are dealing with. Obama is a MARXIST. It's not just that he'll allow abortion, he'll also destroy the family, and the people who oppose him, whether it be of faith or not.

There are real declared martyrs, many of whom were killed for their faith as being "enemies of the state" who can intercede directly for us -- another 50 million plus. Catholic and Orthodox faithful, many priests, nuns, and monks killed because they were faithful. Stalin killed them for national security, to protect peace, and many other things. They have seen this picture themselves and they were killed for their faith.

Don't forget to ask them to intercede for us.

Hugo Chavez endorses this candidate Obama who tells us that "we cannot continue to rely only on our military to achieve the national security objectives we have set. We've gotta have a civilian national security force that is just is strong, just as well funded... blah blah"

Do you know what that is? Forgive me for being so direct, but the little babies will be the least of your concerns when they are coming for you because your faith makes you a threat to national security.

What national security objectives is he talking about?

Why such a powerful domestic military force?

Wake Up! While abortion is an intrinsic evil, it is one of the same scale as the Marxist state. Paul XII said that "no true Catholic may at the same time be a sincere socialist."

You've got hundreds of thousands of priests, St. Maximilian Kolbe included, who were killed in the twentieth century because of their faith. Similar numbers of nuns, and millions upon millions of faithful lay people.

Hitler was socialist who promised change for Germany. He whacked tons of priests. Stalin however, was a Marxist socialist who killed far more.

We need these holy martyrs' help in this election or we're gonna be wishing we lived in their times.

Bill Ayers, in Venezuela recently, praised Marxism. Brzezinski, Obama's foreign affairs advisor, praises Marxism. calls it "Though Stalinism may have been a needless tragedy for both the Russian people and communism as an ideal, there is the intellectually tantalizing possibility that for the world at large it was, as we shall see, a blessing in disguise."

a blessing in disguise? what does he mean? says Brzezinski, "Marxism represents a further vital and creative stage in the maturing of man's universal vision. Marxism is simultaneously a victory of the external man over the inner, passive man and a victory of reason over belief.""

So much for Obama's advisor. Like Jimmy Carter, Brzezinski's help has brought this outsider Obama right into the presidential sphere. Recall that Jimmy Carter was regarded an outsider and a long shot when he ran.

Long gas lines because of artificial gas rationing, farm subsidies, financial stagnation, American hostages in Iran, Afghanistan... all part of the Carter administration under the advisement of Brzezinski.

Now they're back for round 2.

Maybe the "blessing in surprise" behind Stalin wasn't political instruction for us but rather millions upon tens of millions of martyrs who can pray for us to avoid what they endured.

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!

A Powerful Prayer

This just in . . .

"I was praying specifically to the Heavenly Father, asking him, 'How should I pray for the defeat of Barack Obama? Show me how to pray'

Immediately the answer came:

"Pray through the intercession of aborted babies."

This came my way and there has been a great deal of confirmation that God is asking us to pray through the intercession of aborted babies.

Specifically ask those babies who have been so brutalized with arms and legs torn off in the womb, to offer that suffering for a pro-life victory in Christ our Lord.

It is a powerful prayer.

Palin and the Power of the Media

Regardless of how the election turns out tomorrow, I wanted to make one observation about Sarah Palin and the media. Now, I think that Palin was a great pick for Vice-President and that she is very capable and intelligent. But it seems that the general message repeated constantly from every media outlet is that she is unintelligent and is an example of McCain's poor judgment. Of course, this is a poor portrayal of Palin. The possible evidence I can think of for Palin's supposed lack of intelligence is the fact that she attended several different colleges and got a degree in journalism (which doesn't indicate her level of intelligence), she speaks very colloquially (which also doesn't indicate her level of intelligence), and she hesitated in her Gibson and Couric interviews (which can be explained by nerves, hesitation to not make a gaffe, or lack of practice in bloviating).

The media bias is evident when contrasting Palin with her counterpart Biden: Biden was a poor student in law school, commits more factual errors and gaffes than Palin, and has demonstrated no particular intelligence during his long time in the Senate. (On top of this, Biden seems to be a compulsive liar.) I would bet money that Palin is more intelligent than Biden. But that is not what the media is telling us.

Now here is my observation: the media is very powerful and influential. Check the comments of any news story and you'll see that many ordinary citizens who aren't closely following the election believe that Palin is unintelligent, most likely due to the media. But what bothers me even more is that some conservatives who know that the media tends to have a liberal bias have bought into the media's message that Palin is unintelligent and a mistake in judgment for McCain. It's disheartening to see some McCain supporters starting from the premise that the Palin pick was a mistake when arguing in favor of McCain, thereby just assuming that the media's portrayal of Palin is accurate. When I sometimes find myself going along with this assumption, I realize that the media is very influential in setting the terms of the debate as I'm being influenced too.

Fred Barnes in the Weekly Standard has a good article related to this phenomenon. Barnes observes that those who actually know Palin (even though they may disagree with her policies) respect her as intelligent and capable, while those who have never met Palin are the ones who are quick to dismiss Palin as unintelligent.
