On the Fence

I am not going to pass on the merits of the border fence here. There are obviously valid points on both sides of the moral dimensions to that argument, and the only thing I am willing to hang my hat on is that a failure to recognize the counter-points on either side is an exquisite ignorance.

Instead, I want to focus on what I think is an under-analyzed political point in this conversation. The Mexican president-elect, Felipe Calderon, is a solid guy in the mold of President Vincent Fox who narrowly beat the PRD candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. According to wikipedia, President-elect Calderon is a devout Roman Catholic who opposes gay marriage, abortion, euthanasia and even contraception! Now here's the kind of guy we'd love to see leading our neighbors to the South, from Mexico to Chile. President-Elect Calderon is going to take office and will likely immediately face an openly hostile gesture from the U.S. President who's ostensibly on the same side of the culture war as he is.

Acknowledging again that this is not a simple debate, it would be nice to see some co-operation with world leaders who share a culturally/moral conservative opinion. World leaders who aren't afraid to stand up to the aristocratic left are slowly disappearing as the number of countries in which they can reasonably expect to be elected dwindle. In this new time of a fragile new conservative government in Canada (unimpressive though they may be), a fragile new conservative government in Mexico and a fragile majority of conservatives in the US, it'd be nice to see those leaders stand together as much as possible.
